Come and discover the chateau of Aulteribe at the northern tip of the Livardois mountains in Auvergne. Its medieval architecture was restored during the Romantic period with luxurious lounges and more intimate bedrooms, and it houses an outstanding collection of furniture and art works.
Visiting the chateau of Aulteribe
• One of the best furnished chateaux in France. The entire chateau is filled with the collection of Marquis de Pierre, started in the 19th century. The visit provides a tour of the periods and styles of the 15th through to the 19th century. Furniture by master cabinet-makers, Flemish and Aubusson tapestries, paintings from the 17th and 19th centuries, and Chinese porcelain create an unusually fine decor.
• A footpath. A path through the forest and grounds offers a variety of viewing points of the estate and chateau.
Understanding the chateau of Aulteribe
• A Romantic restoration. The chateau, which had retained its medieval appearance, was restored in the Romantic style in the early 19th century. A new facade with machicolations and a gatehouse opens onto a Gothic doorway. A corner tower, a conical pepperpot roof to the South, and a square tower to the east were added. In 1954, the Marquis Henri de Pierre bequeathed the chateau and its collections to the State, and the way the collections are presented was renewed in 2006.
• A reference for cabinet-making. The furniture is used as examples to illustrate lessons in fine arts and techniques for a French Higher Technical Diploma in Craftsmanship.
